What it does
A contact QR code holds a digital business card in the vCard 3.0 format. When someone scans it, the phone offers to save the contact with name, company, phone, email, website and address already filled in.
It saves typing at fairs, meetings and on business cards, and avoids misspelled numbers. Besides the code, you can download the same card as a .vcf file to send by email or messaging apps.
Fill in only what you want to share. The more fields, the denser the code; if the card gets too big for a QR code, the .vcf file still works.
How to use
- Fill in your name, or the company name if the card is for a business.
- Add the phone number (with its country), the email and the website you want to share.
- Fill in the address only if it helps the people who will save it.
- Scan the preview to see how the contact appears on the phone.
- Download the QR code for print and the .vcf file for sending.
Examples
- The back of a business card, so clients save you in one tap.
- A trade fair badge with the salesperson’s contact details.
- The reception desk of a clinic with the appointment line.
Frequently asked questions
Do phones save the contact straight from the camera?
Yes. The camera on iPhones and most Android phones recognizes vCard codes and offers to add the contact. Some older phones need a QR reader app.
What is the .vcf file for?
It is the same card as a file. Send it by email or messaging, and the recipient opens it to save the contact, even without scanning.
Why does the code say the card does not fit?
A QR code holds a limited amount of data. Remove fields you do not need, shorten the address or lower the error correction level; the .vcf file has no such limit.
Can I update my details later?
Not in a code already printed: it is static. Create a new code and file with the new details and replace the old copies.
Which name field is required?
A first name, a last name or a company name is enough. The vCard standard needs a name to show in the contact list.
Privacy and permanence
Your contact details are turned into a code and a .vcf file in your browser and are not sent to our servers. Anyone who scans the printed code can read the details you chose to include.
